Flooding and Erosion Palava
Rainy season is here again and it’s that time we need to make sure everyone’s home, lives and properties are secured and protected from being swept away as a result of the devastating effects that comes with it. Year in year out, there’s always been warnings and mass orientation from organizations and agencies of government on what the citizens should know and do to make sure they’re protected.
Agencies like National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) operating under the Federal ministry of Environment, are agencies that are directly involve and are in the fore front of tackling the menace posed by excessive flooding and the resultant crisis that comes with it.

The Registrar/CEO: Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) Dr Baba Yakubu Mohammed, was a guest on “Kontri Mata” a Radio Nigeria network programme where heexplains the various functions accrue to the different agencies under the Federal Ministry of Environment, saddled with the responsibility of handling flooding and other flood related situations.
Starting his discussion by explaining the actual functions of the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), he said that their work is to regulate sanitary inspectors in Nigeria and the act that established them was enacted in 2002. Among other things he mentioned was that their agency is charged to make sure that all sanitary inspectors are well trained to meet up with international best practice.
Dr Mohammed went further to explain what the masses should know and do, to avert any impending danger that could come up as the rain has started, particularly mentioning that all gutters and draining systems should be rid of any trash and dirt that people throw inside, especially plastic waste.
Also in his analysis, he mentioned the challenges faced by the council, their relationship with other sister agencies and how they’ve been corroborating with each other to get the best result possible and advised the citizenry to abide by the regulations giving to them by all the agencies under the Federal Ministry of Environment, so that Nigeria can be a better place for all.
